Grade 6 to Year 7 Transition
Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, bringing new opportunities, friendships, and experiences.
At Sunshine College, we understand that the transition from Grade 6 to Year 7 is an important journey for both students and their families. Throughout the transition process, we provide opportunities for students to become familiar with Sunshine College, meet their teachers and classmates, build new friendships and develop a sense of belonging in their new learning environment.
Our goal is for every student to walk through our gates feeling confident and excited about the opportunities ahead.

This is an opportunity for new families to speak with Principals and teachers about the transition from primary to high school, and become familiar with the campus.

Orientation Day for 2027 Year 7 students
Tuesday 8 December 2026, 8.50am - 3.00pm
Orientation Day is a huge day for our newest students, and a way for them to get a feel for what their high school life will be like. They’ll be given lockers, shown around the school and get a taster of their classes.
First Day of Year 7
Friday 29 January, 2027
Students should arrive early (the bell music will start at 8.50am), in school uniform and ready for class to begin!
Year 7 Families Welcome BBQ
Tuesday 9 February, 4.00pm - 5.30pm
This is an opportunity for all new students and their families to meet with the Campus Teaching Team, Principal, Engagement Team and the Student Peer Support leaders. And a sausage sizzle!

Year 7 Musical productions
Held twice a year, all Year 7 students take part in the musical, half of the students singing, half of the students acting, and then switching roles in the second musical later in the year.
College Athletics Carnival
Held in April, a great way for students to get in the school spirit by dressing up in their house colours and competing for the House Cup!

The number of Year 7 places can vary from year to year and the Department of Education and Training (DET) determines the enrolment priorities for all government schools.
Sunshine College in accordance with DET enrolment priorities applies the following enrolment criteria when determining Year 7 placements:

Students for whom the school is the designated neighbourhood government school.

Students with a sibling at the same permanent residence who are attending the school at the same time.

Where the regional director has restricted the enrolment, students who reside nearest the school.

Students seeking enrolment on specific curriculum grounds.

All other students in order of closeness of their permanent residence to the school.

In exceptional circumstances, compassionate grounds.
Permanent residential address is defined as where the student is living with their own family within the designated neighbourhood area (Zone). It does not include staying with another relative, friend or a business address.
All Year 7 applications are made according to the Department of Education Placement process whilst your child is in Grade 6. Your child’s primary school will organise the Year 7 secondary school application process.
Sunshine College encourages parents of prospective students to tour the school during the day to observe the school’s curriculum and engaging programs.
